I can’t deny it. The day I got this particular acceptance, I cried. I had submitted to Rust + Moth so many times and when the email came in that they had accepted my poem, I was in disbelief. I still am. Rust + Moth, in my opinion, is publishing some of the best contemporary poetry online and in print, and to have my work sit alongside that of so many writers I admire, is an absolute honor. The Autumn issue is incredible, full of poems that have left me breathless and in tears. If you would like to, you can read my poem, here.

I am a writer, going blind in Los Angeles. This blog is my story of a slow approach to darkness as I traverse through the rubble of urban life. It is what I see in the withering spaces of my remaining vision. It is humor and despair and darkness and light. It is what I witness as the world slowly disappears.

Holy smokes! No kidding they selected this one for their publication. Goosebumps. Wow, Susan. My god, it was flawless. You are talented beyond measure and if you ever question that, just read this poem over and over again. Is it wrong that I want to light that doctor’s mustache on fire?? What an asshole.
September 14, 2018 at 6:54 am
I want to light his mustache on fire, too! Raggedy assed rat bastard! Or to give him just one hour of knowing he was going blind. Just one hour of that pain.
September 14, 2018 at 10:51 am
I am a lucky woman to have such strong amazing women on my side!!! Thankfully, the Doctor I have know is wonderful and kind and brilliant!
September 14, 2018 at 10:50 am
Thank you, Beautiful!!!! I wanted to light his mustache on fire too….total asshole. I am so lucky to have you in my corner!

Having been on both sides of vision care, doc and patient, your poem spoke to me on a personal level.
Explaining bad news was difficult , and I always worked to introduce helpful care. Sadly, we have all been in offices that you describe. There are caring doctors, but many are not. Wishing you well.
September 14, 2018 at 10:54 am
George, I have no doubt you were wonderful with your patients. The specialist I have now is kind and wonderful and brilliant. Thank you for your kindness, George.

You are so talented and your poem is earth shattering good. On top of that you are generous and gracious not just to the publication, but also to your fellow writers. Bravo Susan!
September 15, 2018 at 7:53 am
I love you BB! Thank you!
September 15, 2018 at 8:32 am
No lighting mustaches on fire ladies! Unfortunately no ass kicking either ( at least from me) I will however print copies and leave them at each of the doctor’s offices I have to visit this week. Susan have you ever submitted anything to The Mighty? I think you speak for patients everywhere with this.
September 15, 2018 at 8:57 am
You kick ass, even with your foot out of commission, Grace! I have been nervous to submit to The Mighty, but perhaps I should think about it. I have some prose pieces about some of the horrifying experiences with Docs and Techs. Thankfully, the specialist I have now is beyond wonderful!!!
September 15, 2018 at 8:33 am
This is awesome, Susan! It’s brilliant the way you’ve made this experience so relatable. This is a well-deserved triumph for you and a treat for your readers. Thanks!
September 15, 2018 at 8:58 am

I am so far behind my friend. I just saw this and read your.poem. The enormity of your words pierced my heart and I just sat there staring at the last two lines. Tears clouded my vision and I wept. I write about pain, but my pain is nothing compared to what.you are dealing with. God bless you dear friend and congratulations and being accepted at Rust + Moth!! Hugs & Love ☺❤
