Sidlak poetry (sid/lak) is a structured poetry consisting of 5 lines with 3-5-7-9syllables AND A COLOR. The last line must be a COLOR that describes the whole poem or the feelings of the writer.
I just learned about Sidlak poetry from the love blogger, https://mukhamani.wordpress.com and I thought I would give it a go. I am not sure if I am totally following the form, but this is my attempt:
She sinks down
Under the deluge
Safe in the branches of earth
The black threads of noise falling silent
I love exercises like this! Anyone who wants to, please give it a try, and post it in the comments section!!!

Is it done?
the song that we sing
when our time is slipping by
into the yellow sunrise of day

So lovely!!!! I couldn’t adore you more!

Very nice, but I think there should be five lines. First four lines with three, five, seven and nine syllables and the fifth line should have a colour not no syllables restrictions.
It is fun isn’t it ?

So not surprised I didn’t get the instructions right – hahaha. It is a great challenge!

I should try it again using the correct format. Are there any sites dedicated to Sidlak poetry? I learned about it from an amazing woman – https://mukhamani.wordpress.com- and would love to read more.

Unfortunately there was no site for sidlak poetry. “Sidlak” is a filipino-visayan word meaning shine and the original name for it was rainbow poetry. 🙂 hope you enjoy writing sidlak 🙂

Umm, I am going to leave this challenge to the big kids. I will fail miserably, and I am delighted to stand in the corner and be witness to greatness. Susan, you can do anything. Any. Damn. Thing. Amazing as usual!!

Tanya, there is never any failing, only truth and authenticity and those things are in your writing in such abundance. But, never ever is there pressure either. You are, as ever, lovely and generous and kind! I am so looking forward to reading what you write next; I hope you know you are in my top 5 favorite writers right now; you have the ability to make me feel everything. You are never cloaked or guarded or masked in your writing and that is what I strive for as a writer. And, oh yeah, I think I didn’t exactly follow the rules with this poetry form, but I never was much for the rules. xoxo

Wow, Susan. To be included in your top 5 list is an incredible honour and something I don’t take lightly. It means the world. And knowing that I inspire you to write with truth, is something I am very proud of. There is just no other way I know how to write, so to be accepted for who I am and appreciated for the honesty in which I write fuels me to keep doing what I do. Thank you so much. Please know that your words are lasting and that I hold them very tightly in my heart. Keep breaking the rules and being you, because you are a gift! xo

I sat down
Tell a story true
How angry you get, I’m sick
Your eyes turn black, I run for the door.
3-5-7-9 with a color! Fun!!! ~Kim

I’ve always been afraid of trying to write in a predetermined poetic style. I know it’s an insecurity of mine, that I wrap in a blanket of “meh-not for me and how I write”. I applaud those who cane. Maybe I’ll knuckle down one day and try. You truly did a marvelous job with this one. I love the last line: “The black threads of noise falling silent”

I was exactly the same until last year and said exactly the same thing to myself. I have been stepping more out of my writing comfort zone and it has been really rewarding, mostly because I have discovered some new things about my own voice. You have such talent and range and I think if you decide to venture out a bit, you will be happy with what you find. The Sidlak is an easy place to start (but apparently I wasn’t exactly following the rules).

I might actually give it a try.

Smiling, sunny, safe
Under cover, hiding truth,
Never speaking of the pain, betrayed
But never broken, holding yet a golden hope.
